7mm scale Wagon Bodies
The Historical Model Railway Society (HMRS) in September 2009 produced two 7mm scale '0' gauge resin wagon bodies in limited quantities. A number of early Private Owner Wagons were needed for the 7mm layout based at the HMRS Museum. No commercial products were available so rather than bulk scratch build, masters were made for resin casting. The masters for these models were produced by members of the HMRS who are also 7mm modellers and volunteers at the Museum & Study Centre. One of them has also been restoring full size examples - such as the Charles Roberts wagon pictured below - for many years.
A limited quantity (80 of each body) were initially made for general sale. These quickly sold out and due to demand a second batch of each was ordered in January 2010. To maintain them as limited edition models it was decided this would also be the final batch. The Charles Roberts bodies are now almost sold out apart from a small supply that will be available on our stand at the Warley Show in November 2011. There are slightly more of the dumb buffered wagon body remaining.
A new body will be available early in 2012. This will be a 'Harrison & Camm' (of Rotherham,) 7 plank open with side, end and bottom doors, to RCH 1887 specification. This body will not be limited edition and no restrictions will be placed on the quantity ordered. More details of this model including prices will be provided at the time of its release.
Dumb Buffered 4 Plank Open ‘D’ Ended
built circa 1880.

This wagon is based on a photograph of Barber Walker Co, No 1004, pictured on page 176 of Keith Turton’s Private Owner Wagons book volume 5.

The wagon builder is unknown and no prototype drawing could be found. They would have been in main line use until 1910 after which they were not allowed on to the mainline. They lasted in internal use until the early 1930’s. Some were converted to sprung buffers and these would have lasted longer on the mainline.

Charles Roberts, Sprung Buffered 8 or 10 Ton, 6 Planked Open, ‘D’ Ended
Built to 1887 RCH Specification.

Inspiration for this model came from the preserved wagon on display in the MRT’s ‘Kirtley Museum’ at Swanwick Junction although this wagon has detail differences from the model produced.

Details for the model were taken from Plate 30 of Private Owner Wagons, Vol 1, (revised 1988) by Bill Hudson. This wagon is in the livery of the ’Flockton Coal Co, Wakefield’. They were built from 1888 until at least 1910. Suitable modelling period: 1888 until early BR.
